Day 2 Month of Gratitude

November 2, 2009

There have been many interesting observations today.  My thinking all day has been about which gift in my life I would claim as the gratitude for the day. And as I’ve done that, so many ideas flashed through my mind.I must have had 20 or so different thoughts all competing to be “the one”.

And then it became so clear to me. My choice for the gratitude of he day is this. I am so grateful to see ” whereever we put our focus, that gets bigger”.

It does not make any difference what it is, whatever our attention is focused on, that is what we see more of. If we focus on problems, we see more problems. If we focus on our gifts, we see more of those. If we focus on believing in ourselves and improving our skills, yes that is what we’ll see more of. More belief, more confidence and greater skill in whatever we have been practicing.

As Malcolm Gladwell writes in his 2008 book, Outliers: The Story of Success, 10,000 hours of practice is the starting point for mastery of any skill. His thesis is that practice, or focus, plus timely utilization of opportunities, trumps natural talent every time. If you’re wondering what it would take to get to 10,000 hours of practice, 365 days a year, 4 hours a day, it will take just a little over 7 years.

What do you suppose would happen if one of the ideas we focused on for the majority of the day, just being grateful? I wonder what we would begin to see.
